Review of Final Qualifying at Le Mans 24 Hours 2010

With the penultimate qualifying session starting in damp but drying conditions it was clear that most teams would be using this session to test race setup and handling rather than go for all out pace. Although a dry line was appearing around circuit conditions were tricky and few cars were trying to beat yesterdays times.

Audi and particularly Allan McNish were agressive early on on the session, closing the gap between them and the leading Peugeots, but other than showing they have good downforce in the wet they never really threatened the dominance of the Peugeots at the top of LMP1. It remains to be seen whether Audi are playing the long-race game, or whether they will be hanging on to Peugeot’s coat tails all weekend.

Elsewhere it was sad to see the early retirement of the No. 96 Ferrari of AF Corse who didn’t return to the 2nd qualifying session. It is always unfortunate when a lot of hard work comes to nothing. The team will now concentrate efforts on their other car, as the field returns to the familiar 55 cars again.

With little changing in the LMP1 field with the resumption of the third and final qualifying session it was in the LMGT2 class where the battle for pole was hotting up. As many cars called it a night before the midnight deadline, traffic on the ever drying circuit decreased and so did the lap times. A big push from the Corvettes saw less than a second between the first 4 cars and times kept changing right up to the end of the session.

In LMP2 the battle for pole was really down to 2 cars; Highcroft & Strakka. At the end of the session the Strakka Racing team took the honours with a qualifying time of 3.33.079, which proved to be quicker than some of the strugglers and new cars in LMP1 who had settled for the times from Wednesday.

In LMGT1 the Aston Martin DBR9 of Young Drivers successfully qualified fastest ahead of the Ford GTs and the Corvettes of Luc Alphand, with a time of 3.55.025. The Matech Ford GT in third position qualified in 3.55.583 showing just how close the first 3 cars were around the Le Mans Circuit.

And so at the end of the evening a story was unfolding in the LMGT2 class. The timesheets recorded the Risi Competizione Ferrari ahead of the other cars in the class with a time of 3.59.233, but they were closely followed by the 2 Corevette Racing cars and the surviving Ferrari of AF Corse. All cars were sub 4 minutes, with only hundreths of a second separating them all. However after midnight the ACO scrutineers in the pit lane reported a problem with the Risi Ferrari, provisionally demoting them to the back of the grid. However, it remains to be seen where it will start come Saturday afternoon.

Review of First Qualifying at Le Mans 24 Hours 2010

As many had predicted the fastest cars in the 1st qualifying session for the Le Mans 24 Hours 2010, were the diesel powered Peugeots and Audis. What was perhaps more surprising was how much more speed the Peugeots had over their German rivals. At the end of the session the Peugeot Number 3 car driven by Pedro Lamy, Sebastien Bourdais & Simon Pagenaud was nearly 4 seconds faster than the fastest Audi.

The session finished with the 3 factory Peugeots fastest in LMP1, followed by the 4th Peugeot run by Team Oreca Matmut. The 3 Audis followed meaning that the fastest 7 cars in this session were all diesels. Aston martin will be satisfied with their qualifying session bringing the 2 Aston Martin Racing petrol powered Lolas in 8th & 9th with the Signature Plus Aston Martin Lola in 10th. Elsewhere in LMP1 Drayson Racing finished in 14th after the car was forced to stop on the Mulsanne straight, and Beachdean Mansell team managed a place behind. Rebellion Racing will be disappointed with their initial showing in 16th, but they know there is a long way to go.

The battle in LMP2 saw the all British driver team at Strakka Racing ending the session quickest. They were pushed hard by the Highcroft Racing team featuring one of last year’s winners David Brabham behind the wheel. Both of the Oak Racing cars set respectable times and RML will be pushing hard to move up positions in the upcoming sessions.

The LMGT1 class saw the Young Driver Aston Martin Racing DBR9 set the early pace. The experience of Tomas Enge, having raced in LMP1 last year, clearly showing. The Matech Ford GT was 2 seconds behind the DBR9 with the 2 Corvettes of Luc Alphand a second further back.

The battle for the LMGT2 crown could be the most intersting of them all. In the first qualifying session the bragging rights were taken by the Ferrari of Risi Competizione driven by Pierre Kaffer, Jaime Melo and Gianmaria Bruni. In 2009 the GT2 race was a straight fight between Ferrari and Porsche so it is interesting to see the 2 Corvettes of Corvette Racing in provisional 2nd & 3rd in this class. The fastest Porsche was that of the IMSA Performance car in 4th place, but still only 2 seconds behind the leading Ferrari. The BMW M3s of BMW Team Schnitzer look to be steady in the middle of the field whilst the Jaguar XKR was ploughing a lonely furrow towards the back of the class.

With rain forecasted for the remainder of the qualifying sessions on Thursday, a lot could change from these initial qualifying positions.

Aston Martin confirm they will race at Le Mans 2010

Aston Martin Racing have confirmed that they will enter two Works LMP1 cars bearing the iconic blue and orange livery of Gulf Oil in the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours.

The British team exceeded all expectations at Le Mans in 2009 by finishing fourth overall, having been quickest of the petrol powered prototypes from start to finish in its maiden LMP1 outing.

In addition, Aston Martin Racing will compete in three races prior to the Le Mans 24 Hours 2010 with one LMP1 car. The races will provide the team with valuable on-track experience prior to Le Mans 2010 and include the first two rounds of the American Le Mans Series 2010 – the 12 hours of Sebring on 20th March and the Long Beach Grand Prix on 17th April and the opening round of the European Le Mans Series 2010 at Paul Ricard in France on 11th April.

Aston Martin Racing drivers, Chris Buncombe (GB), Stefan Mücke (DE), Harold Primat (CH) and Darren Turner (GB) return for the Le Mans 2010 season and will be joined by experienced sports car driver Adrian Fernández (MX).
Fernández is new to Aston Martin but no stranger to sports car racing and the American Le Mans Series having won the LMP2 class outright in 2009.

The team will also compete in selected blue riband races around the world post Le Mans 2010, details of the remaining race programme and sixth driver will be subject to further announcements in the coming weeks.

The LMP1 cars will be powered by the same Aston Martin V12 engine which forms the basis for the Aston Martin DBS, V12 Vantage, DB9 and forthcoming four-door Aston Martin Rapide.

“Having won the Le Mans Series Team and Driver titles in 2009 it will be a hard act to follow,” said Aston Martin Racing Team Principal, George Howard-Chappell. “However, we are looking forward to a great season of racing and we hope to have another strong showing at Le Mans 2010. I’d like to welcome Adrian to the team, I’m sure with his experience he will be a great addition to our driver line-up.”

Tickets and travel for the the Le Mans 24 hours, 12th & 13th June 2010, are available on this website. Click here to go to our Le Mans 2010 pages.
